A copyright conundrum: understanding what is beyond the code in a computer program

A blog by Dr Karen O'Neill uses the Google v Oracle case to show that copyright in software may extend beyond the computer code itself, raising questions about whether the structure, sequence and organisation of application programming interfaces (APIs) should also be protected. It argues that while copyright law clearly protects the written code of a program, there remains significant legal uncertainty about how far that protection extends to the underlying architecture and design of software.
