Liz Pryke

I have been employed as an Associate Lecturer in the Law Department (FBL) since 2010 teaching the law of contract and tort at Level 3 (2010-2018) and Level 2 (2015-2023).

I am a qualified solicitor who practiced from 1990 to 2011 in the areas of commercial and private client litigation disputes specialising in contract and tort law and health and safety. I acted for private individuals and commercial organisations as a claimant and defendant solicitor. I worked as inhouse solicitor for British Telecommunications plc and Cape plc (1996-2011) defending litigation claims and acting as health and safety advisor.
I became the health and safety inhouse training advisor for BTplc which allowed me to move to teach at the OU (part time) whilst fulfilling my parental responsibilities. I have also developed my teaching expertise by teaching CILEX Level 6 at Sheffield College (Contract, Tort and Employment Law) from 2014-2016.

I became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2013 as I studied a Postgraduate qualification in teaching with the OU alongside teaching my students. This study has helped me appreciate the challenges that our students face as they manage their work and personal life, especially meeting deadlines. I can empathise with students when they receive their marked assessments and Tutor feedback and understand the support that our students need as their personal tutor.

I have been involved with designing tutorial activities and assessments for Law Modules and enjoy the variety of work available. I try to make my Tutorials as engaging and interactive as possible and include practical scenarios. Student feedback that my learning activities have helped them understand how to use IRAC in answering a problem-solving question, or how feedback has improved their legal academic writing and or referencing skills is a highlight of my day and motivates me to improve my students’ learning.
