Biography

Elena Tudosie combines a strong academic legal background, with market-place practical hands-on experience of the Legal Services industry.

She is currently a PhD Researcher in Law at the Open University School of Law, having previously lectured at postgraduate and undergraduate levels at the University of Bedfordshire and the School of Economics & Law. As an accomplished member of Toastmasters International, Elena is the immediate past president of Bedford Speakers where she has been a member since 2013.

Her current research into “The 'Right' to Die with 'Dignity'” involves an examination of jurisdiction attitudes and legislation on assisted suicide with particular focus on Oregon (USA) and Canada, as well as the changing landscape of the law on assisted suicide in England & Wales.

Her considerable legal sector experience has taught her that these issues cannot be viewed only from an academic viewpoint of theory, but are heavily influenced by practical socio-political and legal considerations dictating political and social policy, which frequently impact upon each other.

Elena says, “My areas of expertise are a bit of a mix, but they all hang together. The academic background and theory are the foundational building blocks upon which legal frameworks are built. However, the drafted statute, legislation and precedent case law that arrives therefrom is heavily influenced by practical implementation at the coal-face of legal practice in real life. I have been fortunate to gain experience in both and am able to draw upon them, hopefully to good effect."

Elena has viewed several high-profile cases which have received significant media attention within recent years and uses her numerous law industry contacts to good effect and gain invaluable insight into pertinent case law while it is being made.

Over the years, she has also built up a significant network of contacts within the UK and European legal community, as well as within political circles, which can assist in analysis and primary research enabling her to “think outside the box.”

As to outside interests, Elena says, “If I could indulge my obsessive interest in juicing, but in several European languages simultaneously, while speed walking or keeping fit in some other way with people I like, that must be a perfect day!”
