Law affects every aspect of our lives. Since 2003, I have taught on three Open University law courses, W200 Understanding Law, W100 Rules, Rights and Justice: an introduction to law and Y166 Starting with Law. Together or singly, these courses make a fantastic introduction to law and the legal system from different perspectives.
I came to OU teaching from a background in legal publishing and writing and I also teach in further education. As well as tutoring, I monitor the marking of other tutors, contribute to course development and act as a consultant on Y166. I know how it feels to be a mature student – I did my LLM a few years ago at a conventional university and since working with the OU have completed a postgraduate certificate in online and distance education. Now I dabble in the occasional science short course! I can therefore testify to the quality of materials and support the OU provides.
I really enjoy working with OU students, even though I may never meet them face to face. Through tutorials, phone, email and assignments, you can really get to know someone well and share their successes and frustrations. I never cease to be amazed by the dedication and organisation displayed by our students, often in the face of very difficult circumstances. It is a unique job and one I think I am very lucky to have.
